Homoclinic solutions for a class of prescribed mean curvature Liénard equations

Abstract
In this paper, the problem of a homoclinic solution is studied for the prescribed mean curvature Liénard equation \((\frac{u'(t)}{\sqrt{1+(u'(t))^{2}}})'+f(u(t))u'(t)+g(u(t))=p(t)\), where \(f\in C(R,R)\), \(g\in C^{1}(R,R)\), and \(p\in C(R,R)\). Under some conditions, the author obtains the result that the equation has at least one nontrivial homoclinic solution for \(p(t)\not\equiv0\), and the equation has no nontrivial homoclinic solution for \(p(t)\equiv0\). The arguments are based upon Mawhin’s continuation theorem.
1 Introduction
In this paper, we investigate the existence and non-existence of nontrivial homoclinic solutions for a class of prescribed mean curvature equations,
where \(f\in C(R,R)\), \(g\in C^{1}(R,R)\), \(p\in C(R,R)\).
As is well known, a solution \(u(t)\) of (1.1) is named homoclinic (to 0) if \(u(t)\rightarrow0\) and \(u'(t)\rightarrow0\) as \(|t|\rightarrow +\infty\). In addition, if \(u\neq0 \), then u is called a nontrivial homoclinic solution.
A prescribed mean curvature equation arises from some problems associated with differential geometry and physics (see [1–8] and the references therein). In the past years, the problem of periodic solutions for the prescribed mean curvature equation has attracted many researchers’ attention [9–13]. For example, by using an approach based on the Leray-Schauder degree, the authors in [10] studied the periodic solutions for nonlinear equations with mean curvature-like operators. Considering the delay phenomenon to exist generally in nature, Feng in [11] studied the existence of periodic solutions for a prescribed mean curvature Liénard equation with delay as follows:
S Lu and M Lu in [12] further studied the existence and non-existence of periodic solutions for the following prescribed mean curvature equation with multiple delays:
and Li in [13] studied the existence of periodic solutions for a prescribed mean curvature Rayleigh equation. Recently, the problem of existence of homoclinic solutions for some second-order Hamiltonian systems has been extensively studied by using critical point theory [14–17]. However, the problem of homoclinic solution has been rarely studied for a prescribed mean curvature equation like (1.1). Liang and Lu in [18] investigated the existence of a homoclinic solution for the following equation:
where \(c>0\) is a constant, but the term containing the first derivative is only linear with respect to \(u'(t)\).
Let T be a positive constant, like in the work of [18, 19], for each \(k\in \mathbf{N}\), we investigate the existence of \(2kT\)-periodic solutions \(u_{k}(t)\) for the following equation:
where \(p_{k}:R\rightarrow R\) is a \(2kT\)-periodic function such that
\(\varepsilon\in(0,T_{0})\) is a constant independent of k, \(T_{0}=\min\{T,1\}\). Then a homoclinic solution for (1.1) is obtained as a limit of a certain sequence of \(\{u_{k}(t)\}\).
In this paper, unlike the methods based on critical point theory for guaranteeing the existence of homoclinic solutions in the work of [14–17], our approach for obtaining the existence of homoclinic solutions for (1.1) is based on topological degree theory. In detail, the existence of \(2kT\)-periodic solutions to (1.4) is obtained by using Mawhin’s continuation theorem [20], not by using critical point theory. This is due to the fact that there is a first derivative term \(f(u(t))u'(t)\) in (1.4), and then (1.4) is not the Euler-Lagrange equation associated with some functional. Furthermore, we not only investigate the existence of a homoclinic solution to (1.1), but we also study the non-existence of a homoclinic solution to (1.1).
2 Preliminary
In order to use Mawhin’s continuation theorem [20], we first recall it.

Let X and Y be two Banach spaces with norms \(\|\cdot\|_{X}\), \(\| \cdot\|_{Y}\), respectively, \(\varOmega \subset X\) be an open and bounded set and \(L: D(L)\subset X \rightarrow Y\) be a Fredholm operator of index zero. The continuous operator \(N:\varOmega \subset X\rightarrow Y\) is said to be L-compact in \(\bar{\varOmega }\) provided that:

and where we denote \(X_{1}=\operatorname{Ker} L\), \(Y_{2}=\operatorname{Im} L\) we have the decompositions \(X=X_{1}\oplus X_{2}\), \(Y=Y_{1}\oplus Y_{2}\). Let \(P:X\rightarrow X_{1}\), \(Q:Y\rightarrow Y_{1}\) be continuous linear projectors (meaning \(P^{2}=P\) and \(Q^{2}=Q\)), and \(K_{p}=L|^{-1}_{\operatorname{Ker} P\cap D(L)}\).
Lemma 2.1

Let X and Y be two Banach spaces with norms \(\|\cdot\|_{X}\), \(\|\cdot\|_{Y}\), respectively, Ω be an open and bounded set of X, and \(L: D(L)\subset X \rightarrow Y\) be a Fredholm operator of index zero. The operator \(N:\bar{\varOmega }\subset X\rightarrow Y\) is said to be L-compact in \(\bar{\varOmega }\). In addition, if the following conditions hold:

then \(Lv=Nv\) has at least one solution in \(D(L)\cap\bar{\varOmega }\).
Consider the following system:
Obviously, \((x(t),y(t))^{\top}\) is a solution of (2.1), then \(x(t)\) must be a solution of (1.1), and finding homoclinic solutions of (1.1) is equivalent to finding a solution \((x(t),y(t))^{\top}\) of (2.1) such that \((x(t),y(t))\rightarrow(0,0)\) as \(| t|\rightarrow+\infty\). Similarly, finding a \(2kT\)-periodic solution to (1.4) is equivalent to finding a \(2kT\)-periodic solution to the system
where \(y(t)=\frac{x'(t)}{\sqrt{1+(x'(t))^{2}}}\). It is easy to see that \(\max_{t\in[-kT,kT]}|y(t)|<1\). Let \(X_{k}=Y_{k}=\{v=(x,y)^{\top}\in C(R,R^{2}),v(t)=v(t+2kT)\}\), where the normal is defined by \(\| v\|=\max\{|x|_{0}, |y|_{0}\}\), where \(|x|_{0}=\max_{t\in[0,2kT]}|x(t)|\), \(|y|_{0}=\max_{t\in[0,2kT]}|y(t)|\). It is obvious that \(X_{k}\) and \(Y_{k}\) are Banach spaces.
Furthermore, for \(x\in X_{k}\), denote \(\|x\|_{p}\) by \(\|x\|_{p}= (\int_{-kT}^{kT}|x(t)|^{p}\, d t )^{1/p}\), where \(p\ge1\) is a constant.
Now we define the operator
where \(D(L)=\{v|v=(x,y)^{\top}\in C^{1}(R,R^{2}), v(t)=v(t+2kT)\}\).
Let \(Z_{k}=\{v|v=(x,y)^{\top}\in C(R,R\times(-1,1)),v(t)=v(t+2kT)\}\). Define a nonlinear operator \(N:\bar{\varOmega }\subset Z_{k}\subset X_{k}\rightarrow Y_{k}\),
Then problem (2.2) can be written as \(Lv=Nv\) in \(\bar{\varOmega }\).
Clearly, \(\operatorname{Ker} L=\{v|v\in X_{k}, v'=(x'(t), y'(t))^{\top}=(0,0)^{\top}\}=R^{2}\), and it is also easy to prove that \(\operatorname{Im} L=\{z\in Y_{k}, \int_{0}^{2kT}z(s)\, d s=0\}\), so L is a Fredholm operator of index zero.
Let \(P: X_{k}\rightarrow\operatorname{Ker}L\), \(Pv=\frac{1}{2kT}\int^{2kT}_{0}v(s)\, d s\), \(Q: Y_{k} \rightarrow\operatorname{ Im} Q\), \(Qz=\frac{1}{2kT}\int^{2kT}_{0}z(s)\, d s\). If set \(K_{p}=L|^{-1}_{\operatorname{Ker} p\cap D(L)}\), then

For all Ω such that \(\bar{\varOmega }\subset Z_{k}\subset X_{k}\), we have \(K_{p}(I-Q)N(\bar{\varOmega })\) is a relative compact set of \(X_{k}\), \(QN(\bar{\varOmega })\) is a bounded set of \(Y_{k}\), so the operator N is L-compact in \(\bar{\varOmega }\).
Remark 2.1
In view of the definition of the nonlinear operator \(N:\bar{\varOmega }\subset Z_{k}\subset X_{k}\rightarrow Y_{k}\) in (2.3), we see that there must be two points \(\rho_{0}\in(0,+\infty)\) and \(\rho_{1}\in(0,1)\) such that the open and bounded set Ω, which is associated with Lemma 2.1, should be \(\varOmega =\{v|v=(x,y)^{\top}\in Z_{k}, |x|_{0}<\rho_{0},|y|_{0}<\rho_{1}\}\).

3 Main results

In order to study the existence of \(2kT\)-periodic solutions to (2.2), we firstly study some properties of all possible \(2kT\)-periodic solutions \((x_{k},y_{k})^{\top}\) to the following system:

Theorem 3.2
Suppose that conditions (A1) and (A2) hold. Furthermore, the positive constant T satisfies (3.1). Then for each \(k\in \mathbf{N}\), (2.2) has at least one \(2kT\)-periodic solution \((x_{k}(t),y_{k}(t))^{\top}\) in \(\varSigma _{k}\subset X_{k}\) such that

Proof
In order to use Lemma 2.1, for each \(k\in \mathbf{N}\), we consider the following system:
a \(2kT\)-periodic solution of system (3.20). Since \((0,1)\subset(0,1]\), we have \(\varOmega _{1}\subset \varSigma _{k}\), where \(\varSigma _{k}\) is defined in Theorem 3.1. If \((x,y)^{\top}\in \varOmega _{1}\), by using Theorem 3.1, we get

So condition (H3) of Lemma 2.1 is satisfied. Therefore, by using Lemma 2.1, we see that (2.2) has a \(2kT\)-periodic solution \((x_{k},y_{k})^{\top}\in\bar{\varOmega }\). Obviously, \((x_{k},y_{k})^{\top}\) is a \(2kT\)-periodic solution to (3.3) for the case of \(\lambda=1\), so \((x_{k},y_{k})^{\top}\in \varSigma _{k}\). Thus, by using conclusions (3.2) and (3.3) in Theorem 3.1, we get
Hence the conclusion of Theorem 3.2 holds. The proof is completed. □
Theorem 3.3
Suppose that conditions (A1) and (A2) hold. Furthermore, the positive constant T satisfies (3.1). Then (1.1) has at least one nontrivial homoclinic solution.
Proof
By using Theorem 3.2, we see that, for each \(k\in\mathbf {N}\), there exists a \(2kT\)-periodic solution \((x_{k},y_{k})^{\top}\) to (2.2) with
where \(A_{0}\), \(A_{1}\), \(B_{0}\), \(B_{1}\), \(\rho_{0}\), \(\rho_{1}\), \(\rho_{2}\), \(\rho_{3}\) are constants independent of \(k\in \mathbf{N}\). Equation (3.23) together with Lemma 2.3 shows that there is a function \(u_{0}:=(x_{0},y_{0})^{\top}\in C(R,R^{2})\) and a subsequence \(\{ (x_{k_{j}},y_{k_{j}})^{\top}\}\) of \(\{(x_{k},y_{k})^{\top}\}_{k\in \mathbf{N}}\) such that for each interval \([a,b]\subset R\), \(x_{k_{j}}(t)\rightarrow x_{0}(t)\) and \(y_{k_{j}}(t)\rightarrow y_{0}(t)\) uniformly on \([a,b]\). This together with the condition of \(|y_{k}|_{0}\leq\rho_{1}<1\) in (3.23) implies that
Below, we will show that \((x_{0}(t),y_{0}(t))^{\top}\) is just a homoclinic solution to (1.1).
Since \((x_{k}(t),y_{k}(t))^{\top}\) is a \(2kT\)-periodic solution of (2.2), it follows that
For all \(a,b\in R\) with \(a < b \), there must be a positive integer \(j_{0}\) such that for \(j>j_{0}\), \([-k_{j}T,k_{j}T-\varepsilon_{0}] \supset[a, b]\). So for \(j>j_{0}\), from (1.4) and (3.25) we see that

It is easy to see from (3.28) that \(x_{0}(t)\) is a solution for (1.1). Thus, by (3.29) and (3.30), \(x_{0}(t)\) is just a homoclinic solution to (1.1). Clearly, \(x_{0}(t)\not\equiv0\), otherwise, \(p(t)\equiv0\), which contradicts assumption (A2). Hence the conclusion of Theorem 3.3 holds. The proof is completed. □
Theorem 3.4
Suppose that \(xg(x)\le0\) for \(x\in (-\infty,0)\cup(0,+\infty)\) and \(u_{0}(t)\) is an arbitrary homoclinic solution to (1.1). Then the following statements are true:

If \(p(t)\ge0\) (\(p(t)>0\)) for all \(t\in R\), then \(u_{0}(t)\le0\) (\(u_{0}(t)<0\)) for all \(t\in R\).

(2)
If \(p(t)\le0\) (\(p(t)<0\)) for all \(t\in R\), then \(u_{0}(t)\ge0\) (\(u_{0}(t)<0\)) for all \(t\in R\).
Proof
We only prove the cases outside the brackets.
(1) Suppose that \(u_{0}(t)\) is an arbitrary homoclinic solution to (1.1), then

If statement (1) in Theorem 3.4 is not true, there must be a point \(t^{*}\in R\) such that \(u_{0}(t^{*})>0\). It follows from (3.32) that there is a constant \(\rho>0\) such that \(t^{*}\in(-\rho,\rho)\) and \(u_{0}(t)<\frac{u(t^{*})}{2}\) for \(t\in(-\infty,\rho)\cup(\rho,+\infty)\). Let \(t^{**}\in[-\rho,\rho]\) such that \(u_{0}(t^{**})=\max_{t\in[-\rho,\rho]}u(t)\), then

So \(u_{0}'(t^{**})=0\) and \((\frac{u_{0}'(t)}{\sqrt{1+(u_{0}'(t))^{2}}})' |_{t=t^{**}}\le0\), and then from (3.31) we see

By using the assumption of \(xg(x)\le0\) for \(x\in(-\infty,0)\cup(0,+\infty)\), we have \(u_{0}(t^{**})\le0\), which contradicts (3.33). This contradiction implies that statement (1) in Theorem 3.4 is true.
Similarly, we can prove that statement (2) in Theorem 3.4 is also true. The proof is completed. □
By using Theorem 3.4, we can obtain the following results.
Corollary 3.1
Suppose that \(xg(x)\le0\) for \(x\in (-\infty,0)\cup(0,+\infty)\). If \(p(t)\equiv0\), then (1.1) has no nontrivial homoclinic solution.
Corollary 3.2
Suppose that \(xg(x)\le0\) for \(x\in (-\infty,0)\cup(0,+\infty)\) and \(u_{0}(t)\) is a homoclinic solution to (1.1). If there are two points \(t_{1},t_{2}\in R\) such that \(u_{0}(t_{1})u_{0}(t_{2})<0\), then there must be two points \(t_{3},t_{4}\in R\) such that \(p(t_{3})p(t_{4})<0\).
As an application, we consider the following example:
where \(\theta\in R\) is a constant. Corresponding to (1.1), we can chose \(p(t)=\frac{\theta e^{t/2}}{e^{-t}+e^{t}}\), \(m=4\), \(m_{0}=3\), and \(l=1\) such that assumption (A1) holds. Furthermore, by a direct calculation, we can easily obtain
This implies that assumption (A2) also holds, and \(\sup_{t\in R}|p(t)|=\frac{\theta}{4}3^{\frac{3}{4}}<\frac{3\theta}{4}\), \(\alpha= (\frac{3}{2} )^{\frac{3}{4}}\theta\), \(\beta=\frac {2}{\sqrt{\pi}}\theta\). Let \(T=\frac{1}{2}\). Since \(\lim_{|\theta|\rightarrow+\infty}\rho_{1}=+\infty\) and \(\lim_{\theta\rightarrow0}\rho_{1}=0\), where \(\rho_{1}=(2T)^{-\frac{1}{2}} (\frac{\alpha^{m}}{m_{0}} )^{\frac {1}{2(m-1)}}+\beta\sqrt{\frac{T}{2}} [\frac{M}{l}+1 ]\) is determined in (3.1), it follows that there is constant \(\theta_{0}>0\) such that
So by applying Theorem 3.3, Theorem 3.4, and Corollary 3.1, we can obtain the following results:

If \(\theta\in(-\theta_{0},0)\cup(0,\theta_{0})\), then (3.34) has at least one nontrivial homoclinic solution.
